Kuwait City ehh, in Kuwait, eh..

March 27th, 2007 by mago

Like living next-door to your mother in law, no wonder Kuwait have had a somewhat troubled past! Imagine that starting point next time you complain….

I’m Iraq! No I’m Iran! Shut up, my name is Mr Saudi!

In a country with only 2.7 million people you might expect everything to be low-scale and population wise the capital Kuwait City is no different with it’s barely thirty-ish thousand inhabitants but if you look vertically, cause after all this is a site about skyscraper and not a population sencus, you will see for yourself a full blown skyline!

Not only humans fight for the view of Kuwait City’s tallest structure,
the Liberation Tower, 372 m, 1220 ft.

Now, Kuwait have a thing for towers, the Liberation Tower where actually meant to be called The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower you see, but after Saddam and his men was drivven out of Kuwait back in 1991 everyone become so happy they decided to name it what it’s called today: the Liberation Tower. But this tower is not the only one and most recognizable of them all is probably the Kuwait Towers.

Built already in 1979 makes you think whom the Chinese
got inspiration from to Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower..?(built in 1994)
Ball’s on a pole are decorative nevertheless.

But 187 m, 614 ft makes no one happy today, big balls regardless and Kuwait have realised that better then most others and that’s why I bothered writing this stupid introduction so let’s cut the crap and get down to business!

Voila! And what the f*ck this is left for now.

Hong Kong you better believe it

March 22nd, 2007 by mago

With more skyscrapers then the Chicago, the birtplace of the modern day skyscraper or any other city in the world for that matter, Hong Kong’s dense skyline leaves no skyscraper fanatics heart unmoved. So what would be a better place for a crazy proposal like this, the Bionic Tower:

Parking your yacht can be quite difficult these days.

Now, for those of you who are thinking about signing up at your nearest madhouse I can calm you down: Yes, you have seen it before but No, it wasn’t in Hong Kong. The very same skyscraper has been proposed, or “envisioned” for Shanghai.

Is it me or is the tower who’s leaning?

Fast Facts:

Status: Vision
Height: 1128 m(3701 ft)

New tallest approved for spiring Tel Aviv(Israel).

March 7th, 2007 by mago

New tallest approved for Tel Aviv! And it’s not like the city lack any skyscrapers as it already is! Israel’s second city(3 million metro pop) located by the coast is one of the most important technological centers in the middle-east and as we all know technology require skyscrapers!

Israel or the Gold Coast? Not the exact location of the new tower as it is projecteted more inlands
but a small part of one of Tel Aviv’s clusters.

So let’s cut the crap now and get on with this approved skyscraper, the Egged Tower! 320 m, 1050 ft is tall enough to take a major lead as a tower even in skyscraper city like Tel aviv(and no, I didn’t make that strange name up).

The tower look kind of poor on the rendering as it not show of the cladding very good and with that in mind I think we might be looking at one of the better looking skyscrapers in the area. Let the future show!(and hopefully a more potent illustrator…) I keep you updated!

Fast Facts:

Egged Tower
Status: Approved
Height: 320m(1050 ft)
Floors: 80
Architects: Eitan-Goshen Architects

Extra: Office-space and room for one of these:

A Mall, Weeaah! Thanks Matthew Strong!

From Russia with…hm, pirog’s and well love.

March 1st, 2007 by mago

17 th biggest city in the world, can you guess it? It’s Moscow I’m talking about, but for old cold war’s sakes let’s be fair and also mention it’s 6th place back in 1950, measuring city-size is always a tricky thing and some mean Moscow is Europes largest city and so maybee cause nr of human beeings in a crowded place is not what we’re here to read about.

But Russian Pirog’s are? First of all this is actually a Swedish Pirog but that’s not
important and second of all I’m not trying to freak you out, it actually IS a pirogue it’s just
it’s not beein heated in the microwave yet and foremost of all: I’m trying to make a point here which
is that population in comparition with skycrapers is out of just as little of importance as the nationality of a pirogue.
I think.

To lead the subject into what it’s intended to be let’s talk alittle bit about monumentalism. Moscow IS monumentalism and No, I’m not drunk. With monumentalism is Moscow come height and here height doesn’t necessarily have to involve skyscrapers.

The 330 ft, 100 m tall space monument for example.

Other examples of this is churches in funny colors with a onion on top. However also skyscraper have had it’s era in Russian(Soviet) history. The Seven Sister skyscrapers where built in Stalinist style in the 1940, 1950:s.

The tallest of the seven sisters, Vysotniye Zdaniya
(Moscow State University) 240 m, 785 ft tall.

Not to forget of course is also the Ostankino TV Tower, once the tallest free standing structure in the world at 540 m, 1772 ft.

So tall it won’t even fit on the picture, let me se if I can find a better one…

Hm, well, maby representative for a troubled past, dunno.
Check out better Ostankino pics here if you want.

But just as the wind have changed down i Gorkij park so has building style and politics and also the skyline. It’s tallest at the moment, the Triumph-Palace is however not very representative of this but at least it’s fairly new and represents the current upswing of skyscrapers.(4 buildings UC abow 1000 ft, 300 m)

Triumph palace, 264 m 866 ft and the tallest of Moscow.
Topped out in 2005 believe it or not.

Tianjin, China: Shy architects?

February 19th, 2007 by mago

It’s amazing how these gigantic projects(to us Westerners at least) can circle around as noothing but loose rumours for years and then all the sudden start construction. Can’t imagine that where I come from, Sweden: the media would be all over them, perhaps that’s why nothing ever get built…(?)

The Tianjin tower is what I have in mind this time. 337 m, 1106 ft tall, proposed but not a single picture around and no architect but it woulden’t surprise me if the foundation is laid already. I keep investigating. In the meantime a Tianjin pic and the facts we got so far.

The Tianjin Tower
Status: Proposed
Height: 337 m (1,106 ft)

Shanghai: Let’s play!(the skyscraper-game)

February 2nd, 2007 by mago

Let’s play! Locate the non existing skyscrapers in the picture, the reward is a skyscraper-enlightened-state-of-mind.

Non-existing skyscrapers in the picture include the new tallest Shanghai World Financial Center butthe skyscrapers I’m looking for is the two in front of the future tallest: the Shanghai International Finance Center I & II.Photo courtesy to Cesar Pelli & Associates Architects and Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd.

Classy design + Classy height + Shanghai = Approved!

Tianjin: Just as Pimp my Ride.

January 26th, 2007 by mago

History is the shit! And Tianjin is full of it, trust me. People seem to love history cause Tianjin is on the top twenty list “Most crowded places”: history don’t come for free. As China’s third biggest city it also come with some skyscrapers, a couple of hundred to be specific but not really any super talls. The Tianjin Tv-tower surrounded by…what?

Thanks god the Chinese know how to lit things up…

But just as in Gorkij park and Pimp my ride “Thing’s is about to change” but saying it this time is sir Atkins Walters Webster at the appropriately named Atkins Walters Webster -Design Group.

Shanghai, China: Another twister…

January 24th, 2007 by mago

Another twisting skyscraper in the footsteps of the Turning Torso in
Malmö, Sweden but this must be one of the better in it’s class,
I mean -what a beast! And what luck they switched design…

New Design. Photo courtesy to John Portman & Associates International, Inc

Cause 30-St-Mary-Axe -like designs like that is only good enough for
smaller cities like London. (I realise I pretty much have sentenced
myself to death know…)

Old Design. Photo courtesy to: Not a single soul.

However it’s only proposed but perhaps you wou like to know it’s name
anyway:
